I express a nostalgia of a life pre-digitalization through the representation of this digital world in an analogue manner: sowing fabrics. Developing digital technology is making us more efficient but banishing the human touch. Though digital technology is convenient, people still have reminiscent memories of an analogue experience.

In shaping my idea, I think of how to emulate the monitor of the average modern individual. To create the user's persona, I consider a variety of factors, including age, race, job, and hobby; I also collect websites and software they use frequently. For example, in the monitor of a musician, there would be composing software and music player. Then, I produce a fabric collage of these digital images and complete the whole monitor by sewing all of the components.

Nowadays, people automate their tasks with Python and analyze large quantities of data with AI technology at professional firms. However, people still cook, write their letters by hands, and take pictures with film camera. Digital technology is rapidly advancing everyday, but people always reflect wistfully on the past. In my work, I highlight the nostalgia of the common person for the analogue world of yesteryear.


나는 차가운 모니터 속 세상을 따뜻한 원단으로 재현해 인간미에 대한 노스텔지어를 표현한다. 디지털 기술이 발달되며 인간의 투박한 손길은 점차 사라지고, 그 과정의 산물로 효율성을 얻었다. 그러나 디지털 기술이 아무리 발전해도, 인간은 여전히 아날로그적 경험을 그리워한다.

나는 작업을 시작하며, 어떤 사람의 모니터 화면을 만들 것인지 생각한다. 연령, 인종, 직업, 취향 등을 고려해 사용자 페르소나를 만들고, 이에 어울리는 인터넷 창들을 설정한다. 예를 들어, 소설가의 모니터에는 워드 프로그램과 재즈 뮤직 플레이어가 떠 있는 식으로 말이다. 원단을 오리고 붙여 인터넷 창들을 만들고 난 뒤, 실로 꿰어 작품을 완성시킨다. 마치 연극 무대와 의상처럼 완성되는 작품은, 알고리즘에 의해 연출되는 디지털 화면 속 연극성을 내비치기도 한다.

현대인들은 회사에서 파이썬으로 업무를 자동화하고, AI 로 데이터를 분석하지만, 집에서는 직접 요리하고, 때때로 손 편지를 쓰며, 필름 카메라로 사진을 찍는다. 하루가 다르게 디지털 기술은 발전하지만, 우리는 여전히 인간미가 느껴지는 순간을 원한다. 나는 현대인들이 매일같이 쳐다보는 인터넷 창 속에서, 아날로그에 대한 노스텔지어를 자아낸다.
